Ecosystem Pond

These water features are a living ecosystem with rock, gravel, plants, fish. When we build an ecosystem pond in your backyard we add all of these things together to mimic a larger ecosystem. You feed your fish, the fish’s waste contains nitrates, which makes its way to the gravel, the gravel houses beneficial bacteria that breaks down fish waste into nitrates, your plants remove nitrates from the water and the plants give radiant colors to enjoy.

Add-ons to your pond: fish cave, intake bay, wetland filter, LED ligths

Rather than having confusing pond packages with different upgrades, we start your design process with a standard ecosystem pond. Once we get into the placement of your pond and get a feel for what you desire, we can start adding upgrades to your ponds, such as interaction stones, longer waterfall streams, and things to further reduce maintenance like wetland filters. Our most popular additions are fish caves, aquatic plants, and LED lighting. While some of these upgrades may be added later, the LED lights are a sure way to enhance the experience after sundown.

Pondless waterfalls

A Pondless waterfall is a beautiful and sought-after landscape water feature. When space is limited, consider adding this water feature to enjoy the soothing sounds of running water without any effort or maintenance.

Pondless Waterfall is a great option for both small and large outdoor spaces, they are extremely low maintenance, energy efficient, and attract a variety of wildlife. Whether you add a waterfall to your front or backyard, be sure to locate it near a window so the pleasant sounds of running water can be enjoyed from inside your home, too!

While both Ponds and pondless waterfalls bring beautiful sights and sound to your yard, pondless waterfalls are the clear choice for those customers who travel a great deal or do not have the space for an ecosystem pond. These features are a great substitute for a pond if the slope of your yard is too steep for a pond installation.

Pondless waterfalls are a great solution for people with smaller properties since they require only a small amount of usable space. Additionally, if you have children or pets and worry about the safety aspects of a large backyard ecosystem pond, we suggest this great option. We work closely with our clients to ensure that their pondless waterfalls are a natural enhancement to their property, and don’t look out of place. And if you think you may want to add a pond to your waterfall feature at some point in the future, don’t worry: As long as you have the necessary space, our technicians can install your pondless waterfall in such a way that a future pond addition can be a possibility.

Pondless Waterfalls are simply a re-circulating disappearing waterfall and/or stream without the presence of a pond. You can enjoy the sight and sound of running water without the maintenance of a pond. If you are considering a Pondless Waterfall for your yard, you can trust us to get it done right the first time.

Fountainscapes

Outdoor fountain kits can be added to any space in your yard, making them an ideal choice if you want a smaller water feature. Butterflies and birds will enjoy the refreshment your fountain brings to the garden. You’ll delight in the new sights and sounds of nature that a fountain kit provides.

Adding a fountainscape is a quick and easy installation, that doesn’t require a large amount of maintenance. Just like pondless waterfalls, the main upkeep of a fountainscape is keeping water levels at an adequate level. With the addition of an autofill valve the only thing an owner needs to do is enjoy

Reasons for choosing this option

Have a space in the front area home where you want to add curb appeal? Adding a fountainscape could be a low-maintenance way to do so. Or maybe you have a spot in your backyard where you just can’t get grass to grow? Having us to install a bubbling urn in that spot could be just the thing!

Maintanence

While your weekly maintenance takes 5-10 minutes there are some things that will take longer when it comes to maintaining your pond correctly. Rinsing your mechanical filters 3 times per year allows your biological filtration to work efficiently. If this simple task is not performed the life of your pump and filter pads will be decreased. We offer Spring Pond Cleaning, Summer Maintenance, Fall Netting, and Winter closings as part of our maintenance schedules.

  • Spring Pond Cleaning– Dependent on weather these cleanings start in April. The pond will be drained down and cleaned of built-up debris, filters serviced, and inspected for issues. Beneficial bacteria will be added.
  • Summer Maintenance– Trimming of aquatic plants, filters serviced, and feature inspected for issues. Beneficial bacteria will be added.
  • Fall Nettings- Before your trees start dropping their leaves a net is installed over the top of your pond, aquatic plants trimmed back, filters serviced and inspected for issues. Beneficial bacteria will be added.
  • Winter Shutdowns– Once leaf cleanup has taken place on your property your net will be removed and bundled up for storage at your property. Aquatic plants will be cut back for winter and cold water bacteria will be added.

  • Pond cleaning

It is recommended a yearly basis, drain and clean makes it possible for an ecosystem pond to require very little maintenance throughout the year. Starting off the spring with a clean pond helps boost your pond’s ecosystem allowing it to stay cleaner longer.

We always recommend having a drain and clean done in the springtime. We here at GTA waterfalls, usually start cleaning ponds in late March to early April, depending on weather conditions. Cleaning out any debris that may have gathered over the winter, while inspecting all mechanical components, lessens the chance of any issues occurring during the heat of the summer months.

Pond cleaning process

Once on site technicians will pump out the water and clean your water feature. We try to save as much of your pond water as possible, as long as it is in good condition, this not only helps your fish adjust to the freshly cleaned pond but also allows us to keep your fish (frogs and turtles too!) in large 500-1000 gallon holding tanks ensuring their safety. Once the pond is drained down and fish have been safely moved we will powerwash the majority of the algae off of the rocks in your pond, the small amount of algae that is left on the rocks is the home to beneficial bacteria and Bio-film that is necessary for your ecosystem pond to function properly. After power washing, the pond will be rinsed down to remove any built-up sediment within the pond. All mechanical components will be inspected and cleaned, any issues that we may find will be brought to your attention to lessen the chances of issues arising throughout the year. Once the pond has been cleaned the pond water will be returned and new water will be treated and added. The pond inhabitants will be returned to their homes once the water reaches a suitable depth. Beneficial Bacterial will be dosed into the pond to kickstart your biological filtration system. To prevent inflated pond cleaning charges the homeowner is responsible for finishing the refilling of the pond and turning on the pump. All necessary water treatments will be added to the pond before we leave.

Great time to add things like lighting and fountains

Since your pond will be drained down it is a great time to add or subtract things from your pond. There are plenty of things you may want to add to your pond including, but not limited to; LED lights, aquatic plants, aerators, fountains, and auto-dosing systems. Overgrown plants can be cut back to prevent them from taking over your pond.

 Pond repair

Deciding when to repair a pond rather than replace it is a big financial difference. Some ponds may be able to be repaired in an hour or two, others may take much more. When an issue with a pond can only be fixed with extensive and costly work, it may be beneficial to start over and replace your pond.

 Leak search process

  1. If you suspect your pond of having a leak there are a few things you will want to do.
  2. Fill the pond to normal operating level and turn off your feature, if it is the summer or winter we recommend having an aerator installed during this test.
  3. Leave the pond to sit for 24 hours.
  4. If the pond level drops continue to let water drain until it stops or until your fish are running out of water.
  5. When the water stops draining the leak will be right at the water level and relatively easy to find.
  6. If the pond never loses water while sitting your leak is either in your plumbing or your waterfall.
  7. Also keep in mind that evaporation will occur in any body of water. Depending on how much water you have flowing in your system determines the amount of water you will lose daily, on larger systems 55 gallons of water loss is normal.
